Attacktix Transformers Series 2 Starter Now Available

Transformers Series 2 Starters are available NOW! You get G1 versions of Optimus Prime and Megatron as well as Energon Landquake and a Comic-Con style Cybertron Skywarp.

As we get cases of Attacktix from Entertainment Earth, that's where this came from. As far as we know it hasn't shown up in brick and mortar yet, but you can order one online-- or wait.

Each figure has a spring-loaded attack-- basically, all are firing projectiles except Landquake, who has this claw thing. Which is pretty cool.

It ships in an assortment with a companion Star Wars set featuring Chewbacca and Han Solo (Hoth gear) as well as Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper. So Attacktix still has a lot of product on the way, it seems. I'm especially fond of the Legends-style Skywarp in this set.

Designer Notes: When Wampas Attack(tix)

The Battle Master for the forthcoming Star Wars Attacktix Series 5 is arriving now for those that pre-ordered it from certain e-tailers. This mighty figure is of course the Wampa…packed with the Hoth version of Luke…

Designed concurrently with Series 5, this mega pack is the first of the Star Wars figures I’ve worked on to arrive on the scene. The Wampa gets very little screen time in the original ESB, and gets slightly more play in the Special Edition. Either way you cut it (ouch) there’s not a lot of canon to work with. However…the sculptors did an AWESOME job yet again, creating a great figure that feels more like a statue. I struggled a bit with powering the mighty snow beast…but I finally settled on Battle Cry…it seemed oh so fitting for this creature of the snow - matching his thunderous roar. As we found, when attacked, a Wampa can call for aid from his fellow snow beasts. In a large enough point game, a pack of Wampas would be quite the threat to contend with.

Luke was another story…I took the specific storyline element from this scene, Luke’s rescue by Han, and expanded it. This is a pivotal character building moment for Han, where we see his true grit shine through and his determination to risk his own live to save a friend. I could have easily gone the Rescue - If Han Soloroute, but I felt instead the need to expand that condition out, to allow you to play what if. What if Luke was rescued by the X-Men’s Beast instead? What if he was rescued by Starscream? True to form, the Hoth version of Han is a Captain (you’ll find him and Chewie in the Starter), so Luke’s Rescue - If Captain will work just fine in a storyline game. However, if you’re crossing universes (and really, why aren’t you?), you’ll be sure to find plenty of solid Captain figures to support this strategy in game. Enjoy! - B

Hopes of DC and Halo Attacktix May Be Gone For Now

WIZKIDS ANNOUNCES HALO ACTIONCLIX COLLECTABLE MINIATURES GAME

February 1, 2007 (SEATTLE) - WizKids Inc., creator of runaway hit games like HeroClix® and Pirates of the Spanish Main™, announced today its agreement with Bungie Studios and Microsoft to develop a new collectable miniatures game (CMG) called Halo® ActionClix™.

The Halo ActionClix, CMG brings the incredible content of the Halo universe
to the tabletop via the award-winning Clix miniatures game engine. Players
familiar with HeroClix and HorrorClix™ will be able to jump right into the
action and enjoy brand-new game mechanics, including weapon swaps, figure
respawning and vehicle-based combat.

"Expanding the Halo universe into the Clix CMG world is a perfect fit for
the franchise," said Brian Jarrard, director of Franchise and Community
Affairs at Bungie Studios. "WizKids’ commitment to quality and authentic
detail ensures that these new Halo ActionClix figures will appeal to

The first Halo ActionClix set will feature more than 80 unique miniature
figures from the Halo universe, including preview content from Halo 3. A
number of vehicle packs are also being produced, including a big surprise
planned for San Diego Comic-Con this July. Figures will be sold in
randomized Booster Packs. The vehicles and a Starter Game will be sold in a
diorama display format.

"We are proud to be associated with a great brand like Halo," said Lax

envelope with our games and content. The phenomenal Halo video game play
and universe provided us with an excellent spring board for innovation in

The Halo ActionClix CMG is expected to be released at retail in September

DC Battle League
Mattel is out to cash in on the Attacktix thing with their own line of DC "Battle League" figures, to judge from the Toy Fair pictures (courtesy of Toy News International...not very good shots, ASM will probably better pics soon). So, now you can have Batgirl and Harley Quinn fight it out. ;) Looks like there's a new sort of attack figure, using a whiplashing post to have flying or jumping figures smack into targets.

Toy Fair 2007 is underway in New York... lots of Attacktix to see. JoeAttacktix will get them all posted here once we sort through all the photos that will pop up over the next few days.

As far as non-Attacktix stuff that is awesome. Spider-Spud looks GREAT... can't wait for him to hang with Artoo and the Bad Spuds. The SPI-DOG will be a welcome replacement to the pink i-Dog we currently have. Those Spider-Man 3 Superhero Squadron are JUST what I have been waiting for. Two series of the Marvel versions of Intergalactic Heroes and no Spider-Man... of course he was coming. And they are adorable! I must get them all!

Finally, Marvel Heroscape! If you love Marvel Attacktix, and you want something a little more D&D dice rolling action, be sure to pick up Marvel HEROSCAPE as soon as you see it. And if you live in Tampa you better by it before I do!

Q: I see you have a packed portfolio on DesignDevil.com, featuring a wide variety of projects. What are some of your favorite projects?

That's a tough question...I'm really enjoying the Attacktix artwork I've been doing for Hasbro, and I'm not just saying that because this is an Attacktix website!

Honestly, I get to draw some of my favorite characters and toys that I played with as a child, and that is just super cool.

Recently I've been enjoying working on a line of Busts and Action Figures for the new Battlestar Galactica series. I'm a big fan of the show, so it's been a blast.

As far as past projects, I'd have to say all of the Star Wars products I did for Applause during the Episode 1 madness.

That was a unique experience actually. After designing about 2/3 of the product line, I was promoted to Creative Manager, and was able to also direct the sculpting, painting and manufacturing side of things.

Usually after I hand off a design, I have no control over what comes next. Fortunately on the EP 1 products, I was able to stay in control during the entire production and make sure they turned out exactly how I imagined.

Q: Did you have any favorite comics/toy heroes growing up that you were excited to get a chance to add your own style to the latest incarnation?

Yes, for sure. Star Wars is probably at the top of the list.

With all of the Star Wars products I worked on in the past, everything was photo-realistic and had to be completely character correct.

Working on the Attacktix line however, Hasbro wanted a more stylized and animated look to the Artwork, so I have a bit more freedom to infuse some of my own energy and loosen up a bit. It's been really refreshing and a lot of fun.

I've also recently finished artwork for the next series of boosters... but we have to keep those under wraps for now... stay tuned.

Q: You designed the IG Showdown packaging. Now that Attacktix has Transformers versus Star Wars versus Marvel, who would you choose for a three characters battle royale (one from each license)?

Man, another tough one! I'd have to go Boba Fett vs. Iron Man vs. Starscream, or actually, how about Vader vs. Galactus vs. Unicron! That would be insane.

The IG Showdown was so much fun to work on. When I got the call for the project, and heard it was Star Wars vs. Transformers, I was pretty excited.

Hasbro told me which characters to illustrate for the package sides, but when it came to the background insert, they were open to ideas.

I thought the composition of the Death Star facing off against Cybertron would be really cool. For the foreground I went with a Tattooine like setting meeting a Cybertron like city. I think it came off pretty well. The toys looked cool displayed in front of it...and that is the most important thing as far as toy packaging goes.

I just want to clarify; I don't actually design the packaging itself. I am providing all of the character art that is used on the packaging.

Basically I'm illustrating the front or "cover" of the package. The images that hopefully convey some fun and excitement, and make you want to buy that toy!

The guys at Hasbro have done a killer job with the actual packaging design. Working with Rob and Kevin and everyone at Hasbro has been really great.

Q: I know you have had a few products in the toy and game aisles, does the excitement of seeing your own work sitting of the shelf ever get old?

Never. I still love to walk down the isle and see my work. I still take frequent trips to Toys R Us just to see what's on the shelf.

I mostly see the end result of the toys that I designed, and I love that, but it is especially cool to see my actual artwork on the front of the Attacktix packages.

Much of my toy design work goes unseen by the public, but with the packaging artwork, it's right there on the isle for everyone to see. Killer.

Q: Do you play Attacktix?

Is that a challenge!? You're on! Actually, I have not yet had a chance to play a real game, but I'm looking forward to it! Currently I just shoot at stuff on my shelves... and my cat.

Q: What line/license would you hope they choose to add on so you can draw the cover? If it happened, who would appear on the cover?

Now that's an easy one... Yo Joe!! G.I Joe is by far the one I am waiting for most. For the cover art, I'd have to go with Duke vs. Cobra Commander or Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow. Either of those would be killer to draw.

FAQ:
Q: What is gunslinging?
A: In a gunslinging event you get to challenge someone like myself or Joe Manzo to a battle...win, and get a good prize fig. These are pick-up games and not a tournament in and of themselves per se.

Q: "Force Movement", ok?
A: We'll be using the 1 Tix = 1 Inch rule...if there is a problem, a judge will use another fig to remeasure the distance...full moves should be within one tix or so when remeasured.

Q: Is there anything nearby for my family to do while I'm playing?
A: Sure. There are plenty of places to eat, some nearby shopping and a movie theater. There are also some nice malls about 10 or 15 minutes away. Family members who are not participating are welcome to also observe the event and will not need to pay an entry fee.

Q: What does the entry fee cover?
A: All of the events for the day. I expect to have tons of prizes, including door prizes and random drawings. The fee will go towards paying for the cost of the event.

Q: Is there an age limit?
A: Absolutely not! If there are enough younger players, we will possibly run an Apprentice event alongside a Master event. We should also have some people on hand that can teach the game to new players.

Q: What if my figure is messed up or modified?
A: These will be case by case decided by judges. Simple mods like repainted lightsabers would be allowed for example.

Q: Who will judge the custom contest?
A: All attendees can vote on the custom contest. Customs could be repaints or hand crafted figs.

Q: If there is an age break, what will it be?
A: Probably 12 and under, 13 and up.

Brian Wilk Interview in Lee's Toy Review Magazine #171

One of the biggest things in the trading games right now is Hasbro's Attacktix brand of collectible gaming figures. It all started with the Star Wars figures, and has expanded to include Transformers and Marvel. It looks like a natural for the GI Joe brand, though we haven't seen anything hail from that sector yet. We caught up with the brand's head cheerleader, Brian Wilk, of Hasbro, and chatted with him about the line. Here's what he had to say.

Tell us a little about how the Attacktix concept came about.

There are a lot of us here at Hasbro that are longtime fans of trading card games and miniature games. Honestly, we were fooling around one week about four or five years ago and said, "wouldn't it be great if..." we could have them both in one game.
The idea just grew from that. We knew we could make great kinetic based action figures and we started to explore cool ways to move the figures around. Right from the start, our motto was no dice, no board, no rulers. We wanted an easy, straight forward, out-of-the-box, play experience. No matter how many figures you had, you could battle a friend and have a great time. But we also wanted a game with multiple layers of depth that could be as complicated as you allowed it to be.

Describe the play action inherent in the concept.

The play action is completely kinetic based. There are visual and audio representations that make this game different than any other game on the market. I like to joke that once you fire your first missile, you are hooked.

What is it about the brand that you think makes it collectible?

Obviously, it's because the figures are so well designed! It's a game that incorporates the trading card game concept with action figure features - two great collectibles on their own. Look at the essence of a Trading Card Game (TCG), you get powers and abilities that can help you in battle, but there's that fun collectible rarity model; not all characters are equal - some are powerful and tough to get. Hunting for that certain figure is all part of the fun collectible 'thrill of the chase' play pattern. We tested the blind pack concept with kids in our Funlab, and they loved it! So, add that onto an easy to learn and hard to master game, and you've got Attacktix.

And, as the game expands in tot different "universes," it is one of the first times where you can finally settle the score between different brands and licenses to see who would win in the ultimate showdown. Oh, and then there are the chrome based figures, which are also fun to collect.

How's the brand doing in the marketplace right now (going into the 2006 Christmas shopping season)?

The brand has a lot of momentum right now. We look forward to the launch of the new Marvel series as they get introduced into the mix.

What's next for Star Wars Attacktix? What should fans of the Star Wars franchise be looking for in the year ahead?

There will be a few more waves of fan favorites as well as some exciting EU characters in the upcoming year.

Do you have an all-time favorite Star Wars Attacktix figure?

Absolutely. My favorite character is Wicket, and of course there is a story behind it. We were leaving Celebration 3 and we ran into Warrick Davis in the airport. He was with his family and it came up that his kids were fans of Attacktix. We got to talking and they asked if Wicket was going to be made. I told them that not only was he going to be made but he will have a fantastic power and be an integral part of the Ewok army.

Everyday, someone out there is buying their first booster of Attacktix, and everyday someone is getting their first chrome and wondering just how lucky they are, and what exactly a chrome is. Today I'm going to spell it all out so everyone has a reference to guide them through the bling bling of the 'Tix world.

For the past few years now, the latest rage in tabletop gaming has been collectible miniatures. Games like Heroclix have combined the addictiveness of collectible card games with the strategy of traditional miniatures. This past summer a new entry into the collectible miniatures game was made, but it has gone under most gamer’s radars because it can not be found in a comic or game store, but rather in the toy aisle at Walmart. Star Wars Attacktix was released in May of 2005 as part of the Revenge of the Sith toy blitz. By their own admission, Hasbro created the Attacktix game as a quick cash in, but found the product line’s success to bypass even their wildest expectations, and they are now fully supporting it...
